Dental Rehabilitation

Dental physiotherapy is one of the fields of physiotherapy that deals with the therapy of the stomatognathic system. It is an effective form of treatment for disorders and ailments such as temporomandibular disorders (TMD). It can be used as a primary therapeutic method or as a supplement to prosthetic, orthodontic or implantology treatment. Dental rehabilitation is becoming increasingly popular and is considered the best method of conservative treatment for TMD, showing a low risk of complications at the same time.

Dental physiotherapy complements dental treatment in the case of the following symptoms:

  • swallowing disorders,
  • problems with opening and closing the mouth,
  • bruxism (grinding and clenching of teeth)
  • pain and friction in the area of the temporomandibular joints,
  • tooth pain and hypersensitivity,
  • tension and pain in the jaw area,
  • occurrence of excessive tension in the chewing muscles,
  • migraine,
  • frequent headaches and neck pain, intensifying during teeth clenching,
  • tinnitus,
  • dizziness,
  • nausea,
  • dull pain in the ear or face area,
  • back pain, including the cervical spine,
  • numbness or tingling in the fingers,
  • pain after surgical procedure (e.g. surgical jaw expansion) or after implant placement.

If you wake up with a headache, jaw or neck pain, or notice disturbing clicks and crunching in the area of the temporomandibular joint, consult a specialist. Come to the dental physiotherapy conducted in our clinic and get rid of troublesome ailments.

Consultation

Consultations with a physiotherapist involve determining the cause of discomfort and the patient's therapeutic needs. In addition to conducting a thorough interview, the physiotherapist performs a functional and manual examination of the masticatory system, and develops a plan for dental physiotherapy. The initial consultation allows to determine whether there is excessive stiffness of the masticatory muscles, tooth hypersensitivity, or clicks in the area of the temporomandibular joint.

Manual Therapy

Dental physiotherapy in the field of manual therapy is used to relax muscles in the face and neck using specialized soft tissue techniques. At the same time, it alleviates pain. The techniques used help to mobilize and restore joint mobility in the head area. Hands, touch, and various types of pressure are used for diagnosis and treatment.

Lymphatic drainage of the face

Lymphatic drainage is a physiotherapeutic technique that reduces swelling after surgical procedures. The massage stimulates lymph circulation, eliminating its stagnation at the site of the swelling.

Classic face massage

Facial massage relaxes, has analgesic and rejuvenating effects. It positively affects the circulatory and lymphatic systems. It is also a good way to stimulate and relax, as it directly affects the nervous system (calms or stimulates the patient, causing more efficient transmission of stimuli to the muscles). Massage improves joint mobility and also increases muscle elasticity, making them work more efficiently and have better blood supply.

Facial massage also serves a relaxation function. The treatment supports the secretion of serotonin - a tissue hormone called the "happiness hormone" - which improves mood.

Used techniques: stroking, rubbing, kneading, tapping and vibrations.

Frenulum Therapy

These are rehabilitative procedures preparing for the frenulum incision and facilitating convalescence. They support the healing process and the restoration of the frenulum's functions (speech efficiency, tongue and lip functions).

Physiotherapy before and after orthognathic surgery

This procedure, part of dental physiotherapy, involves preparing the musculoskeletal system of the oral cavity for surgery and supports the reconstruction of facial structures. It allows for a faster return to fitness after orthognathic surgery. It is an excellent complement to basic therapy, where physiotherapy - like other branches of medicine - becomes a standard after all types of surgeries.

Taping

A therapeutic method that uses special 100% cotton patches. They are covered with a hypoallergenic acrylic adhesive, which is activated by heat.

These patches are usually applied to the skin, in the area where we want to achieve a therapeutic effect. The highest quality cotton has a thickness and stretchability similar to human skin. After application, the tape gently lifts the skin and increases the space between its surface and the muscles, thus providing a therapeutic effect. It is an extension of physiotherapy conducted in the office.

Applications of taping:

  • pain relief
  • relaxation of tense muscles
  • joint stabilization
  • assistance in lymph drainage
  • improvement of blood circulation
  • restoration of proper muscle function

Laser biostimulation

Laser biostimulation is the use of the therapeutic properties of laser light in physiotherapy. The laser stimulates tissues, thereby aiding in the relaxation of muscular structures, stimulating the circulatory system, providing pain relief, anti-inflammatory effects, and supporting other physiotherapy techniques.

Physiotherapy in Dentistry

Physiotherapy of the stomatognathic system is an advanced support for dental treatment by restoring the proper functions and mobility of muscles, ligaments, and other structures involved in chewing, speaking, or swallowing.

Rehabilitation combined with the treatment of temporomandibular joint dysfunction or, for example, orthodontic procedures, can contribute to faster achievement of treatment goals or even condition the possibility of its implementation.

Manual therapies or dental massages effectively increase the comfort of life and functioning, relax the patient and improve the appearance.

In modern dentistry, the cooperation of a dentist with a physiotherapist is becoming a global standard, and in Poland, it distinguishes the best clinics.
